Suspension of club

Should LCI Suspend the Club That Expelled a Long-Serving Member?

If the club’s board was appointed rather than elected, as stipulated in the Lions Clubs International Constitution and By-Laws, this would constitute a clear violation of LCI’s governance standards. LCI emphasises fair elections and adherence to the International Constitution and By-Laws. Appointing board members without an election undermines democratic principles and the organisation’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Expelling a member with over 50 years of service, especially under the authority of an illegally appointed board, raises serious questions about fairness, due process, and the club’s adherence to LCI policies.

LCI’s International Board of Directors and Legal Division have the authority to address violations of the constitution, bylaws, and policies, including election disputes and constitutional complaints. The District Governor Suspension Policy and Multiple District Dispute Resolution Procedures suggest that LCI can suspend or take corrective action against clubs or districts that fail to comply with governance standards. If the club’s actions (illegal board appointments and improper expulsion) are verified, LCI could suspend the club to enforce compliance and protect its reputation.

How is verification possible when LCI does not entertain complaints by non-members?

The expelled member had written to LCI while he was still a member and LCI has not responded to his email. What is LCI's excuse, this time?

LCI should establish clear reporting mechanisms for members to raise concerns about governance, ensuring non-members or concerned parties have a pathway to voice issues without dismissal.

The reputation of Lions Clubs International as a globally respected service organisation is now questioned. Failing to address governance violations could erode trust among members, donors, and the public, especially if long-serving members are treated unfairly.

To strengthen LCI’s credibility and attract new members who value transparency and fairness, LCI should consider suspending the club if the governance violations (illegal board appointments) and the expulsion of a long-serving member are substantiated and the club refuses to correct them. This would align with LCI’s policies and protect its reputation.

This would demonstrate to current and prospective Lions that LCI prioritizes fairness, transparency, and adherence to its constitution, ultimately strengthening the organization’s culture and public trust.
