Is conversation now a members-only perk?

The following is a LinkedIn post by and my comments.

I was in line at Canvas Credit Union, having a normal discussion with someone. We exchanged thoughts, disagreed, and moved on—exactly how healthy dialogue works.

But then, the branch manager actually walked outside to tell me:

“You’re not a member, so you can’t bother our customers.”

Excuse me—what?!

It’s a shared branch. And last I checked, engaging in conversation isn’t a privilege—it’s a fundamental part of being human.

This moment highlighted something bigger:

️ We are being conditioned to avoid real engagement.

️ Disagreeing = a disturbance.

️ Talking to strangers = a problem.

️ We’re expected to swipe, nod, and move along.

But here’s the thing: growth, connection, and understanding happen through conversation. If we can’t even exchange ideas in public without someone policing it, we have a serious issue.

We need more discussion, not less. More thoughtful debate, not silence.

What do you think? Have you noticed this shift happening too? Let’s talk. (Assuming that’s still allowed.)

I then commented as follows:

Interesting that I should see this post.

In 2017 when I complained to Lions Clubs International about money being siphoned out by a Lions club I belonged to, my complaint was rejected saying I was no longer a member.

In September 2024 I complained about a Lions Club that appointed officer bearers for the FY 2024/2025 without having an election. LCI did not acknowledge receipt of my complaint.

This is ridiculous as I believe anyone can complain based on public interest but...

Luqman, this is exactly why accountability matters. When organizations built on service and leadership start operating without transparency, it creates distrust and weakens their mission.

It’s frustrating when legitimate concerns get dismissed instead of addressed. You did the right thing by speaking up. Have there been any efforts to push for election reforms or stronger financial oversight within Lions Club?

Change doesn’t happen unless people demand it. Let’s keep exposing what needs to be fixed.

Fatima Fernandez Thank you for your response.
Yes, and distrust weakens the Lion Mission.
The previous director of the Registrar of Societies created a new template to deter additional bank accounts from being opened in a Lion Club. However, controls are lax but there is improvement.

As for the election reforms, nothing is being done by anyone.

I wrote to the Legal department of LCI this morning and asked them the validity of office bearers appointed without an election. Let's see their reply.

Luqman Michel, I will add solutions for you to consider:

Post 1️: The Integrity Crisis – What’s Happening in the Lions Club?

🚨 Transparency, Elections & Accountability—Where Did It All Go? 🚨

The Lions Club stands for service, integrity, and leadership, but recent events raise serious legal and ethical concerns. Reports of secretive elections, wrongful notice of expulsion, and misinformation have rocked the organization.

🔎 Key Questions Members Deserve Answers To:

Was a proper election held for 2024/2025 officers? Where’s the proof?

Why was a long-standing member given a notice of expulsion without transparency?

Did leadership misrepresent the situation to the Registrar of Societies (ROS)?

If these issues aren’t addressed, the Lions Club risks losing credibility and trust. And let’s be real—no one supports an organization that hides the truth.

The Bottom Line:

Elections—whether in a local club or for public office—shouldn’t be an insiders-only game. The moment leadership starts playing gatekeeper instead of guardian, you know there’s a problem.

So, whether it’s the Lions Club or the State Election Board, people need to keep asking the hard questions, demand transparency, and refuse to be silenced. Because at the end of the day, a vote without trust is just a formality. And we’re not here for that.
