Overconfidence precedes carelessness.

Here is a Chinese story about overconfidence.

The story is about a praying mantis that waved its arms angrily in front of an approaching carriage, unaware that it was incapable of stopping it? Such was the high opinion it had of its talents.

Like all vain men, the praying mantis had moments of unreasonable confidence.

What you need to remember, with some of the guys from the former Lions Club of Kota Kinabalu Host, is that they don't know they're con men. They're wildly overconfident.

螳臂当车 (táng bì dāng chē).

A mantis trying to stop a chariot - to overrate oneself and attempt something impossible.
